AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?
SEO, AEO and GEO are three acronyms for getting found, and they are often used loosely. This guide separates them, shows where they overlap, and helps you decide where to put your effort.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| Where the result appears | A ranked list of links | A direct answer: a featured snippet, a voice reply, or an AI answer | A synthesized answer written by an AI assistant |
| What "winning" means | Rank high, earn the click | Be the source of the answer | Be mentioned, cited and described well in the answer |
| Typical signal | Rankings, organic traffic | Snippet ownership, being quoted | Mention rate, ranking position, sentiment, citations |
SEO: earn the click
SEO is the mature one. You optimize pages so they rank in a list of results, and success is measured in rankings and organic traffic. It still matters: it drives discovery, and the pages that rank are often the material AI systems draw on.
AEO: be the answer
Answer Engine Optimization started as the practice of structuring content so search engines and voice assistants could lift a direct answer from it, for example a featured snippet. The idea has since widened to cover AI-generated answers too, which is why you now see "AEO" and "AEO AI" used for the same territory as GEO. The common thread is a concise, well-structured, directly quotable answer.
GEO: be part of the generated answer
Generative Engine Optimization focuses on answers that an AI assistant composes: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and similar. There is often no list of links to rank in. The question is whether your brand is mentioned at all, where it sits when the assistant lists options, and whether the tone is favorable. The term is commonly traced to a 2023 research paper on optimizing for generative engines.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
Largely, in practice. The names come from different starting points (snippets and voice versus generative AI), and vendors draw the boundary in different places. If someone sells "AEO" or "GEO", ask what they actually measure and change, not what the acronym says.
What all three share
- Clear, factual content that states what something is and who it is for.
- Consistent facts about your brand across the web: name, category, pricing.
- Independent mentions on sources other people trust.
- Pages that crawlers can read, ideally server-rendered HTML.
Work on any one of these tends to help the other two.
Which do you need?
- Most of your buyers arrive from search: keep investing in SEO, and structure key pages so they can be quoted.
- Your buyers ask assistants for recommendations: add GEO. The first job is measurement, because unlike SEO there is no default dashboard.
- You sell to both: you need all three. Start with the shared foundations above.
How to measure each
SEO has rank trackers and analytics. AEO can be checked by watching who owns the snippet for your target queries. GEO needs its own measurement: run a fixed set of buyer-style questions across AI assistants on a schedule and track mention rate, ranking and sentiment. We explain the metrics in AI visibility score explained and the method in how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT.
PeiGEO covers the GEO measurement side: it runs your question set across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Qwen and reports the results over time. It does not track search rankings or featured snippets, so keep your SEO tools for that.
