Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): What It Is and How to Do It
PeiGEO2 min read
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is optimizing content so that answer engines, such as AI assistants, voice assistants and featured snippets, pick it as the answer. The goal is to be the response, not just a result.
AEO, GEO and SEO
- SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results.
- AEO focuses on being selected as the direct answer to a question.
- GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited inside AI-generated responses.
They overlap. Content that answers a question clearly helps all three. For a deeper comparison, read GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
When AEO matters most
- Your buyers ask direct questions ("what is…", "best…for…", "X vs Y").
- You sell something that is compared before purchase.
- Your category is crowded and buyers rely on short recommendations.
An AEO checklist
- Put a direct, one- or two-sentence answer at the top of the page, then expand.
- Use question-style headings that match real queries.
- Add an FAQ section and mark it up with FAQ structured data.
- Use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for steps.
- Keep facts accurate, current and consistent across your site.
- Check the result by asking the questions yourself, then track them on a schedule with an AI visibility tool.
