Web Search vs No Search: Why the Same Question Gets Different AI Answers

PeiGEO3 min read

Ask an AI assistant the same question with web search on and off, and the brands it recommends often differ. That is not a bug. The two modes draw on different information.

How the two modes differ

Web search onWeb search off
Source of informationSearches pages first, then composes an answerTraining knowledge only
FreshnessCan use recently published contentFrozen at the training cutoff
CitationsUsually lists reference URLsUsually none, or links the model writes itself
StabilityVaries as the web changesMore stable, but still random to a degree

What it means for your brand

With search on, being mentioned depends on what is on the web right now. The model leans on the pages it finds, so your site, press coverage, reviews and community answers all feed directly into the answer. New content and recent optimization can show up quickly.

With search off, being mentioned depends on what the model remembers. If your brand appears rarely in training data, or the information is outdated, the model may skip you or get details wrong. Publishing a new article today will not change that until the model itself is updated.

So the two modes measure different things:

  • Search-on results ask: "If someone searches right now, is your content findable and citable?"
  • Search-off results ask: "How much weight does your brand carry inside the model?"

A simple example

Say you just launched a product and published an announcement:

  • A search-enabled AI may cite the announcement soon and list the new product.
  • A search-disabled AI knows nothing about it and recommends only products already in its training data.

Conversely, if an outdated negative review exists online, a search-enabled AI may cite it, while a search-disabled one may never have seen it.

How to choose and read the results

  1. Pick the mode that fits the goal. To see whether your content gets picked up by AI, use search on. To check baseline awareness inside the model, use search off (PeiGEO's AI Awareness Check asks the model directly without searching).
  2. Do not compare across modes. A search-on score minus a search-off score is not progress or decline. Keep the mode constant when comparing trends.
  3. Watch trends, not single runs. Search-on results move with the web, so two runs of the same question can differ.
  4. Look at both. Strong with search on but weak without means your current content works but the model does not know you yet; long-term exposure is the fix. The reverse means the model remembers you but fresh web content is thin.

In PeiGEO

You can turn web search on or off in the brand settings. Note that whether a given answer actually used search also depends on whether the selected model supports it; a model without search support answers without it even if the switch is on. Each collected answer records whether search was used, so you can check later.
