Why Isn't My Brand Recommended by Perplexity? Seven Common Causes
Perplexity differs from most chat assistants in one important way: it searches the web and cites its sources for each answer. That is good news, because a missing brand is usually a coverage problem you can investigate, not a black box.
Start with the citations
Run a few category questions your buyers would ask ("best X for Y") and open the sources Perplexity lists. Note which sites appear repeatedly: review platforms, "best of" articles, forum threads, vendor comparison pages. Those pages are the raw material of the answer.
If your brand is absent from all of them, you have found the problem.
Seven common causes
- You are not on the pages it retrieves. "Best of" lists and review roundups dominate category answers. No listing there, no mention.
- Your own site does not answer the question directly. Pages that state plainly what the product is, who it is for and how it compares are easier to quote than pages of slogans.
- Competitors have far more third-party coverage. Models tend to repeat what many independent sources say. A brand discussed on many sites out-competes one that only talks about itself.
- Your positioning is vague. If it is unclear what category you belong to, the model has nowhere to file you.
- Old or conflicting information. Outdated pricing or naming on third-party pages can lead to you being skipped or described wrongly.
- Your pages are hard to fetch. Content that only appears after heavy client-side rendering, or that sits behind logins or bot walls, may not be retrievable.
- You measured the wrong questions. If you only tested queries that include your brand name, you learned nothing about unprompted recommendations.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Do the top-cited sources for your category mention you at all?
- Is there a clear, factual definition of your product on your own site?
- Do independent sites describe you in the same terms you use?
- Is the information on those sites current?
Measure before and after
Manual spot checks are noisy because answers vary. Track the same set of buyer-style questions on a schedule and watch the trend. PeiGEO runs this across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen and reports mention rate, ranking and sentiment per platform, so you can see whether a fix moved the needle. For how the numbers are defined, see AI visibility score explained.
